A PIONEER OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF SOMALI’S NATIONLA ORTHOGRAPHY AND COLLECTION AND IT’S ORAL LITERATURE.
This article highlights the pioneering efforts of Shire Jama Ahmed in developing a written form of the Somali language and preserving its oral literature. Despite facing opposition from those advocating for Arabic as the official language of Somalia, Shire championed the use of the Latin script for writing Somali. He believed that the practicality of the Latin script could help advance the Somali language and culture. Shire’s contributions were not widely recognized during his lifetime, but his work eventually led to the adoption of his Latin script in 1972 under military rule. This decision was seen as a significant achievement for the Somali language. Shire Jama Ahmed’s legacy as a language advocate and collector of oral literature continues to be appreciated, and he is buried in Sweden.
